The quilt commissioned to represent the USA at the art exhibit for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, Meeting of the
Women Leaders Network.
The quilt is just over 15 inches (about 40 cm) square.
The card on the top of the quilt reads:
Hand-sewn quilts have a special place among crafts in America. Quilts are both household necessities for coping with cold
winters and handmade works of art. A well-made quilt often becomes a family heirloom that is passed down from generation to
generation. Quilting is still popular in America today.
This miniature quilt is an original design called “Penelope’s Pinwheels.” It uses the block “Criss Cross” from the publication
“Farm Journal” circa 1900. The quilt is a tribute to great grandmother of the quiltmaker, known as Grandma Williams, who
created quilts for each of her more than 50 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Her love of quilting was captured in
this 1949 portrait which hangs in the Pioneer Memorial Museum in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The quiltmaker is Kathryn S. Ramirez. Kathy has been quilting since 1989 and teaching quilting since 2001. Her website is: http:
