The Nine Year Quilt

To learn to quilt,
A noble goal,
A gift for my true love to make.
Mystery shrouds it's final beauty,
I think I have made a mistake.
Years of schooling as I repair the error,
Each stitch a lesson to learn.
With friendships and knowledge to treasure,
Made in Utah and Egypt and Spain.
The nine year quilt is finished now,
The satisfaction of creating earned.
Description from Kathryn, "This mystery quilt began as a
Father's Day gift for my husband Dave in 1995.  Our
children were very little and they made it difficult to
finish the project with my guild.  Because this was my first
quilt with triangles I made the mistake of cutting the
squares the wrong size before sewing on either side of
the cutting line.  Once cut they were too small.  I
needed to redo the calculations and figure the size from
the half triangle squares.  Since I had already finished the
strip sections for the unequal nine patch center, I also
needed to trim the sections to match the new size.
Trimming and squaring the 360 half triangle squares took
so long that it was nearly eight years before the top was
ready for quilting. My quilting design in the border came
about when I was telling my new quilt group about the
history of the quilt.  A friend suggested that I write the
story in the border and quilt it with pearl cotton.  I wrote
the resulting poem and finished quilting it two years later.
This UFO was finally finished in July 2006, the Nine Year
Quilt actually took eleven years to finish!  Perseverance
paid off and it is a beautiful addition to our home."
